Laptop Buying Guide for Students and Professionals

Processor, memory, storage, battery and screen — what to prioritise for study, office work and creative tasks.

A good laptop can last five years or more, so it is worth understanding the key specifications before buying.

Processor

For browsing, documents and video calls, a current mid-range processor is plenty. Video editing, programming large projects or 3D work benefit from higher-end chips.

Memory (RAM)

  • 8 GB — basic study and office work
  • 16 GB — comfortable multitasking and most creative work
  • 32 GB — heavy video, virtual machines and data work

Storage

Choose a solid-state drive (SSD). 256 GB fills up quickly; 512 GB is a sensible minimum for most people.

Battery and Weight

If you carry the laptop all day, look for real-world battery reviews of eight hours or more and a weight under about 1.5 kg.

Screen and Keyboard

A sharp, bright screen and a comfortable keyboard matter more than many people expect. Try one in a shop if possible.
